I called to reserve a truck 3 days prior to pickup, hoping to pick up a truck at 5pm Sunday and return it 5pm Monday. Guy says that since they close at 2pm on Sunday I'd have to get it early "but you can return it by 5 the next day, no problem."
When I go to get the truck, I got a call around 1pm from the manager asking me to come in early since they close at 2. When I got there at 1:30, he said that I must return it by 1:30 the next day to avoid getting charged for a second day.
Now, I know 24 hours is 24 hours. That's fine. This is an independently owned franchise and your employee says the wrong thing, YOU ARE OBLIGATED TO HONOR THAT or give a huge discount or in general be understanding. I asked what he could do for me and he said he'd give me 25 miles free (the rest at $0.67 per mile) and 15% off. This pleased me. I was naïve.
So I got the truck and the lowest level of insurance on it. The form I signed isn't written in a clear way at all, and even the fine print doesn't seem suspect. The manager just handed me the paper and said "sign this" with no desire to look at the vehicle or do anything at all. NO, I'm not going to do that. So I insisted we look at the vehicle. Inside were a hand truck and several dozen mats. "I'll let you use those for free"
I don't believe you. Take them out. Also, where's the ramp?
"There isn't a ramp"
The guy on the phone could have told me that 3 days ago, and I would have been happy to find a different company or even upgrade to accommodate this. The ramp is basically the most important part.
The fuel wasn't full, but the manager insisted it was.
So I got the truck, signed away, and took it home. I stopped at the nearest gas station to fill up before dropping it back off.
48 miles: 10 gallons. There is NO WAY that the fuel was full when I got it, unless the truck only gets 5mpg. Either way, I wouldn't recommend on that alone.
Spoiler alert: HIDDEN FEES
1 day rental: $45
Youthful driver surcharge: $25 (no one told me about this one)
Insurance: $20
Then all of these again (and tax) for a second day. When he said 15% off, he meant 15% off the rental rate which that day was 49.99 per day. I returned the truck at 4:45pm on Monday (as I knew I would originally) and paid $213. This whole experience was a nightmare, and the manager - AMJAD ANSARI - is a crook and a liar. I will not be using Budget Truck again because his franchise perfectly emulates the company's values: nonexistent.
