Did you know?

The Mayflower was the merchant ship that transported Pilgrims from Plymouth in England to the New World. In September 1620 ship set sail from Plymouth, a port on the southern coast of England. There were 102 passengers, and the crew is estimated to have been about thirty, but the exact number is unknown. The Mayflower followed the land-exploring party and sailed into Plymouth, Massachusetts, harbor on 26 December, where it remained until houses could be built for the new settlement. It sailed for England on 5 April 1621, reaching London safely.

This voyage has become an iconic story in some of the earliest annals of American history, with its story of death and of survival in the harsh New England winter environment. The culmination of the voyage in the signing of the Mayflower Compact is an event which established a rudimentary form of democracy, with each member contributing to the welfare of the community.
